"But we have to celebrate And rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life: he was lost and has been found " —Luke 15:32
Finding Musicians
- Contact Anita Bohn, Campus Minister for Music, St. Mary Student Parish: 734-647-8769 (daytime), 663-0557 (St. Mary's), or . Anita does many of the weddings here at St. Mary's, but can also refer you to other pianists, organists, instrumentalists and additional vocalists.
- If you have a friend or family member that will be doing some or all of the music, it is really helpful if they are familiar with Catholic liturgy or if you pair them with someone who is.the mass gets pretty confusing for those who are unfamiliar.
Some Things to Think About
- What kind of musical ensemble do you want? Organ, Piano or both? One voice or several? Do you want to add instruments? Trumpets? Strings? Guitar?
- What style of music do you want? Traditional Hymns? The more contemporary music you hear at St. Marys? Classical?
- Do you want a soloist to do most of the singing or would you like the assembly to participate as much as possible?
Picking Music
- The accompanist or soloist that you hire for your wedding will sit down with you and plan the music for your wedding. Think ahead of time about the questions listed above and begin making a list of potential music. Think about music that is special to you and your family, music that has been powerful for you at church, and music that conveys the message that you are sending with your wedding liturgy.
Music Suggestions
The following are suggestions only and come from the hymnals available at St. Mary's: Gather Comprehensive (GC) and Spirit and Song (SS). The songs are listed in categories but many of them can be used in other places throughout the mass. There are also many, many other appropriate songs.
Preludes
Generally, the pianist plays soft, instrumental music for approximately 10-15 minutes before the ceremony begins. This allows your guests to be seated and have conversation among themselves. If you choose to have something sung as a prelude, it is suggested to have it right before the service.perhaps while the mothers are being seated.
Processional
The most popular are:
Canon in D procession of the Attendants Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring procession of the Attendants Trumpet Voluntary procession of the Bride Trumpet Tune procession of the Bride Opening Song
This is optional but effective if you want to encourage the participation of the assembly right from the beginning of Mass
